Here's what artists Clare O Hagan, herself an ovarian cancer survivor, and Denise Wyllie have to say about their work:

"The challenge of ovarian cancer resides in a place in our bodies where a life begins. Those of us who face ovarian cancer, are aware that it may be the place where our end of life begins.

"To describe in words the experience of cancer, we find ourselves limited by a vocabulary that is inadequate and unwieldy. We are urged to fight, to remain positive. Seeing models of success, we experience some sense of failure when we are unable to mimic them.

"At times we are overwhelmed.

"The artwork, 'The hope that surrounds us,' is a creative visual response to the limitations imposed by words when describing the experience of cancer. We find that visual imagery is the most direct and powerful way to communicate meaning.

"'The hope that surrounds us' is based on biological drawings of the ovary. Here we considerthe shape of the ovary and what it holds. Having a strong circular shape, the art is contemporary, bold, and unashamedly hopeful in its intent.

"With hope we allow ourselves some movement:

"We hope that we are able to manage an uncertain future with some peace.

"We hope that the scientists we support will develop a test that will make for an early diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

"We hope that drugs will be developed and refined to help arrest the development of ovarian cancer in our bodies.

"We hope that it will be soon.

"We hope that the lessons learned from the women who have gone before us are valued and acknowledged.

"We hope that when you engage with the art work, you sense its affirmative action.

"We hope that you are held within its protection.

"We hope you will support the work of the South Carolina Ovarian Cancer Foundation."
